PRACTICE

Identify one source of suffering in your life at this time. It may help to recall the distinction between pain and suffering—you are looking for some dark and uncomfortable feeling that reflects an aspect of your life that is other than you wish it were. It could be a physical or psychological or social or financial or other form of affliction about which you might feel “If only I didn’t have that burden, then I’d focus more on my priorities and my spiritual life.”

Can you accept that disturbing and dislocating feeling of disjuncture between reality and wish? In doing so, can you enter into peace with your suffering, as opposed to pushing it away or burying it or reacting to it? This is not a call to fatalism, as you may yet take vigorous action, but to peel back to the core of your feelings and to accept that this is your reality, your starting point in the now. Reach your arms around your sadness and loss. Expand your inner being so that you can let your feelings sit undisturbed in your chest.

Pay attention to what happens within you when you really do accept your suffering as your lot.
